Marijuana use under Colorado’s recreational pot law should be kept to private residences and members-only clubs, according to a poll of the state’s voters released Monday by Quinnipiac University.

Sixty-six percent of respondents said that marijuana use should be limited to private areas, with 54 percent of respondents saying that they are still in support of the overall passage of Amendment 64, which legalized possession and recreational sales of the drug, six months after it took effect.

Those favoring legalized pot were slightly fewer than when a similar poll was conducted in February, when 58 percent of respondents said they were in support of the measure. A Quinnipiac poll in April found 54 percent support of the law, the same as in the latest survey.

More than 60 percent of Colorado registered voters who responded also said that marijuana should not be allowed in bars and clubs where alcohol is served or at entertainment events where admission is charged.

“Coloradans are still good to go on marijuana for recreational use in private settings, but as far as letting the good times roll in bars and clubs where alcohol is served, voters don’t say ‘smoke ‘em if you got ‘em,’” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll.

Sixty-one percent of respondents say that alcohol is more harmful to a person’s health, while 19 percent say that marijuana is more harmful.

As far as societal consequences are concerned, 59 percent said that alcohol is more harmful to society, while 22 percent marijuana is more harmful and 14 percent say the two substances are equally harmful.
