Medical Cannabis Land Use to Receive Vote

The City of Galesburg may be prepared for the implementation of a relatively new state law after tonight.

Allowing for the cultivation and dispensing of medical cannabis under Galesburg City ordinance was recommended as a legal use in June by the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

The City Council reviewed the proposal at their last meeting, but the proposed change will come to a vote after time has been given for consideration.

Under the “Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program” Act, 22 cultivation centers and 60 dispensaries would be allowed in the state of Illinois.

Should one of those operations wish to locate in Galesburg, the City’s administration says they want to be prepared.

Although several uses would be permissable, state law prohibits their operation within 25-hundred feet of schools and applies other restrictions to residential areas.

Should the changes be approved during tonight’s meeting, any business locating in town would largely be limited to manufacturing areas.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:30 at Galesburg City Hall.
