Police raided an £11,000 cannabis farm set up by a couple to grow their own drugs.
Officers found a room had been converted to cultivate plants at the Carlisle home of Kerry Perett.
A court heard she and her partner Aaron Turnbull were growing cannabis for their “own consumption”.
Inside the house in Henderson Road, Currock, were two crops of plants that would have yielded drugs with a street value of more than £11,000.
Both Turnbull, 31, of Shadygrove Road, Raffles, Carlisle and Perett, 33, of Henderson Road, appeared before the city’s crown court. They were spared immediate jail sentences after admitting producing cannabis between May 3 and July 4 last year.
Clare Thomas, prosecuting, said the police raid found nine large plants and 34 smaller plants.
Turnbull’s finger prints were found on items including cannabis seeds.
“The officers concluded that due to the different size of plants they were two different crops,” she told the court. “Perett’s phone was analysed and showed text messages that seemed to be sent to Turnbull asking him how to look after these plants.”
Turnbull’s defence barrister, Joseph Hart, said his client had suffered “significant problems” and was seeking help. “This is not on anybody’s calculation a large operation,” said Mr Hart. The court also heard mitigation on behalf of Perett, in which it was said she was a hard working mum. Judge Barbara Forrester sentenced Turnbull to 40 weeks jail and Perett to 30 weeks custody.
Both sentences were suspended for a year.
They must both be supervised for 12 months and take part in a “thinking skills” course. Turnbull must also carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.
