A YEOVIL teenager caught red-handed smoking cannabis at his home confessed he had been supplying the drug to his friends as well.

Harry Campbell Waters said that sharing the profits round to his college mates helped him to buy it in bulk, Somerset Magistrates were told.

In sentencing him to a £250 fine chairman of the Bench Christopher Thomas-Peter said he hoped that hitting him in his pocket would make him learn his lesson and warned him that any repetition of the offence could land him a prison sentence.

Waters, aged 19, of Victoria Road, pleaded guilty to being in possession of a quantity of cannabis with intent to supply to persons unknown on May 29 when he appeared before the court at Yeovil.

Alex Lane, prosecuting, said that police were carrying out enquiries in Victoria Road in Yeovil at 3.30pm when they noticed the smell of cannabis coming from the window of an address.

“Waters opened the door and was arrested and when they searched his bedroom found a bag with cannabis in it, an airtight container, a quantity of bags and a grinder,” she said.

“There was also a list of names with money amounts by them and he said the green vegetable matter was cannabis and that he had paid £200 for it the day before.”

The catering student said he smoked cannabis himself and only sold it to friends adding that the people named on the list were people who owed him money for cannabis he had sold them previously.

The total amount of cannabis flowering head that was seized by the police weighed 25.37g worth an estimated £260.

During interview with the police Waters said that he lived with his mother and had a £30 college bursary a week.

He said he bought the drugs in order to pass on the profit and only sold it to friends.

Defending solicitor Chris Baddoo said that that when Waters was arrested there were three other people on the premises with him and they had all been dealt with separately.

“He purchased the drugs in bulk and it was a social supply to friends,” he said.

“He got a part time job while at college which enabled him to buy it in this way and said his friends would in turn give him money for it but sometimes he lost out and ended up owing money instead.”

He said that Waters was a catering student and had ambitions to work as a qualified chef in the future.

“His mother was not too happy when she found out and he has now gone to Turning Point and is trying to address his problem,” he added.

Alongside the fine the magistrates ordered the defendant to pay £85 costs and a £25 victim surcharge. They also made an order for the cannabis and equipment to be destroyed.
