Czech police seize huge amount of cannabis

PRAGUE, June 26 (Xinhua) — Czech police have uncovered a large cannabis lab with over 2,000 plants weighing roughly half a tonne in Hranice, north Moravia, said Czech regional police spokeswoman Marie Strbakova on Thursday.

Strbakova said that six people including four foreigners were detained by police, and five of them were taken into custody.

She said the detained persons could have earned up to tens of million crowns by the illegal sale of cannabis, and the Czech police had worked on the case for almost a year.

The detained foreigners are Vietnamese aged between 26 and 48, and they grew the cannabis in one of the buildings of a firm between the end of 2012 and this June, said Strbakova.

“It was an elaborately built and equipped indoor cannabis lab, with the purchase price of several hundreds of thousands crowns,” she said.

Police presume that the suspects may have reaped the harvest up to four times a year. “They could have had 150 kg of dried cannabis from each of the harvests,” Strbakova said.

If convicted, the men can be sentenced up to ten years in prison. (1 U.S. dollar = 20 Czech crowns)
