Marijuana seized by Coffee County officials following vehicle pursuit

Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton spoke Monday morning, June 23, at the Coffee County Commission meeting, and he updated commissioners on a drug arrest made over the weekend.
Sheriff Sutton said his department had a busy weekend that involved a vehicle pursuit ending with a minor wreck and the arrest of an individual on various drug charges. On Sunday, June 22, at approximately 12:30 a.m., he said deputies were conducting a driver’s license/vehicle safety checkpoint at the intersection of Coffee County Road 709 and Coffee County Road 712.
Sutton said the department had received several complaints of 4-wheelers on the roads, and deputies were conducting the checkpoints in an attempt to catch those riding the 4-wheelers on the roads.
During this particular checkpoint, Sutton said deputies observed a green Towncar approach the scene at a slow speed, but suddenly the driver accelerated through the checkpoint at a high rate of speed. He said deputies gave chase, which continued into Geneva County.
Sutton said the vehicle pursuit ended with a minor crash. He said the suspect then fled on foot but was apprehended by deputies.
Sheriff Sutton said the suspect was identified as Curtis Dewayne Gray, age 37, of Enterprise.
Deputies seized approximately one pound of marijuana, six grams of crack cocaine, hydrocodone and digital scales. Gray was arrested by Coffee County officials and charged with possession of marijuana – first degree, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), possession of a controlled substance (hydrocodone), attempting to elude and reckless endangerment. He also was cited for speeding.
Officials also discovered that Gray had outstanding felony warrants in Houston County for trafficking cocaine and trafficking marijuana.
On Monday morning, Sheriff Sutton said Gray was in the Coffee County Jail awaiting his appearance before the judge.
“This just goes to show there are still drugs moving around,” Sutton said. “As long as they are in our county, we are going to do everything we can to stop them.”
