URBANA — A Champaign County prosecutor dismissed a drug paraphernalia charge lodged against a man arrested by University of Illinois police with a larger group in May.
Assistant State’s Attorney Tim Sullivan said he dismissed the possession of a cannabis pipe charge against Michael Varel, 22, of Troy because, although Varel was present when police searched the house where he was staying, the pipe they found could not be connected to him.
Varel and co-defendant Matthew Daum, 22, were among seven men that UI police arrested May 8 for alleged drug activity at a campus fraternity and a house at 60 E. Chalmers St., C, where former fraternity members lived.
Of the seven, Varel and Daum had the least serious charges — Class A misdemeanors.
Daum pleaded guilty earlier this month to the charge lodged against him: possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sentenced to a year of court supervision, meaning that if he gets in no further trouble he’ll have no record of a conviction.
Criminal charges against Michael Genovese, 20, who lived in the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at 209 E. Armory St., alleging he possessed Ecstasy and LSD intended for sale, are unresolved.
Four other men who lived at 60 E. Chalmers St. are charged with various felonies alleging possession of Ecstasy, amphetamine, psilocybin and cocaine. Four are due back in court next week; the fifth is slated to enter a guilty plea in August.
