Residents reported being overpowered by the smell of the plants coming from the one-bed flat.

One man (29) was arrested at the scene and was taken to Kevin Street Garda Station for questioning.

Cavan shooting

GARDAI have appealed for information about the shooting of a 41-year-old man on the N3 at Aghalane Bridge, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, at the weekend.

The incident happened at around 7.15pm on Saturday and the man was rushed by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyconnell Garda Station on 049 9525580, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.

Murder sentence

THE man who murdered Irish jeweller Dermot O’Toole has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.

A court heard that Gavin Perry was on parole for other armed robberies and was high on drugs when he stabbed the Galway-born jeweller to death.

Mr O’Toole died on July 12 last year as he tried to protect his wife Bridget during the robbery at The Jewel Shed, at Hastings, on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria in Australia.

Sweet deal

Premium Irish chocolatiers are turning to the Chinese market with exports for the first half of the year up 200pc on the same period last year.

The value of Irish chocolate and cocoa exports to China and Hong Kong has risen from €50,000 for the first half of last year to €150,000 for the first half of 2014 according to Bord Bia.

Speaking at the World Chocolate Forum in London this month, Thomas Bischof of Swiss food group ‘Buhler,’ called Chinese demand for chocolate the “fastest growth in history”.

Health of the nation

MORE than 10,000 households will be asked how much they eat, drink, smoke and exercise for a Department of Health survey to reveal the state of the nation’s health.

The last such survey was carried out in 2007, when some 58pc of respondents said they were in excellent or very good health.

But experts believe that this figure will have fallen because of the impact of austerity.
